TeV gamma rays from the blazar H 1426 + 428 and the diffuse extragalactic background radiation

چکیده
The detection of TeV γ-rays from the blazar H1426+428 at an integral flux level of (4± 2stat ± 1syst)× 10erg cms above 1TeV with the HEGRA imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope system is reported. H 1426+428 is located at a redshift of z=0.129, which makes it the most distant source detected in TeV γ-rays so far. The TeV radiation is expected to be strongly absorbed by the diffuse extragalactic background radiation (DEBRA). The observed energy spectrum of TeV photons is in good agreement with an intrinsic power law spectrum of the source ∝ E corrected for DEBRA absorption. Statistical errors as well as uncertainties about the intrinsic source spectrum, however, do not permit strong statements about the density of the DEBRA infrared photon field.

Extragalactic Background Light: new constraints from the study of the photon-photon absorption on blazar spectra
The study of the Extragalactic Background Light (EBL) is crucial to understand many astrophysical problems (as the formation of first stars, the evolution of galaxies and the role of dust emission). At present, one of the most powerful ways to put constraints on EBL is represented by the study of the photon-photon absorption on gamma-ray spectra of TeV blazars. Adopting this method, we found th...
متن کاملThe Extragalactic Neutrino Background Radiations From Blazars and Cosmic Rays
Blazar emission of gamma rays and cosmic ray production of gamma rays in gas-rich clusters have been proposed recently as alternative sources of the high energy extragalactic diffuse gamma ray background radiation. We show that these sources also produce a very different high energy extragalactic diffuse neutrino background radiation. This neutrino background may be detected by the new generati...
متن کاملBlazar Gamma-rays, Shock Acceleration, and the Extragalactic Background Light
The observed spectra of blazars, their intrinsic emission, and the underlying populations of radiating particles are intimately related. The use of these sources as probes of the extragalactic infrared background, a prospect propelled by recent advances in TeV-band telescopes, soon to be augmented by observations by NASA’s upcoming Gamma-Ray Large Area Space Telescope (GLAST), has been a topic ...
متن کاملConstraints on GRB TeV Emission from the GeV Extragalactic Diffuse Gamma-Ray Flux
TeV gamma rays emitted by GRBs are converted into electron-positron pairs via interactions with the extragalactic infrared radiation fields. In turn the pairs produced, whose trajectories are randomized by magnetic fields, will inverse Compton scatter off the cosmic microwave background photons. The beamed TeV gamma ray flux from GRBs is thus transformed into a GeV isotropic gamma ray flux, whi...
متن کاملA New Determination of the Extragalactic Diffuse Gamma-ray Background from Egret Data
We use the GALPROP model for cosmic-ray propagation to obtain a new estimate of the Galactic component of gamma rays, and show that away from the Galactic plane it gives an accurate prediction of the observed EGRET intensities in the energy range 30 MeV – 50 GeV. On this basis we reevaluate the extragalactic gamma-ray background. We find that for some energies previous work underestimated the G...
